The Niger area (Nigeria) was invited to a conference of selected lands. In the conference, each of the lands was scheduled to state its relationship with its people. This was to compare the contributions of the respective lands and the people, with regard to national development. In particular, the conference could not understand why Nigeria became the headquarters of world's poverty.
In the end, of all the testimonies, that of Nigeria was the most pathetic. Below is an excerpt of Nigeria's testimony, entitled 'Broken Covenant':
"In the beginning, I entered into a covenant with my people. The covenant was to build a great nation of 'Peace and Progress'. I was to contribute my very rich natural resources (Green), while the people bring their 'Unity and Faith' (White). With great enthusiasm, I volunteered to double my pledge. Accordingly, I donated double green. That's why our national flag is Green, White, Green. Indeed, I more than quadrupled my pledge, so that the people, after roasting themselves in a needless civil war, protested that I had rained too much money on them, to the extent that they didn't know how to spend it.
But very regrettably, my people failed woefully to keep their own part of the bargain. Even when I renewed my clarion call of 'Arise, O Compatriots', the call was never obeyed. Yes, they made a pledge, in which God is the Witness. But the pledge was never fulfilled. No unity and faith.
My fellow lands, this is why there's no peace and progress, but insecurity and poverty in Nigeria. I keep on demanding from Nigerians, 'Here is my Green, where is Unity and Faith?'
That's my testimony."
